The NiLiBoRo is a surgical robot, made by researchers and engineers at the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany, that is designed to make it easier than ever to remove tumours from the inner ears of patients while keeping the physical impact of surgery to a minimum.
The robot's name is a German acronym which translates to 'Non-Linear Drilling Robot'. This robot allows surgeons to remove tumors from the inner ear through a small tunnel. This isn't altogether new, but what makes this surgical robot unique is the fact that it can alter its orientation to prevent contact with patients.
Ultimately, the NiLiBoRo will make it possible to achieve higher success rates with inner ear tumor removal procedures with less effort, making for more efficient and valuable use of hospital time and resources.
