Tredje Natur — a Danish architecture studio, is offering functional solutions to urban problems with street tiles. The company has been prototyping street paving systems that will help reduce flooding in cities since 2014. This year, Tredje Natur installs a 50-meter stretch of its 'Climate Tile' in Copenhagen's Nørrebro neighborhood.
The design of the street tiles boasts small holes that allow the collection of rainwater and its funneling to planted areas that are adjacent to the sidewalk. The motivation behind Tredje Natur's functional project is to "to create an improved microclimate." This pavement system development will not only alleviate the urban experience for citizens during rainstorms but it will also nourish and bring about welcoming greener strips in the ever-developing city.
