Flood-Smart Basketball Courts

These Grain Collective Courts Adapt Play Areas for Flood Resilience

The Grain Collective basketball courts are designed to handle flooding by sinking the playing surface below ground level so excess water can be safely captured and drained. The courts use a graded sunken floor to direct stormwater into controlled drainage zones, transforming the court into a temporary holding basin during heavy rainfall. The surrounding seating and landscape are shaped to rise above the playing deck, preventing water from spilling into spectator or public areas. The materials chosen for the court and perimeters are resistant to water exposure and allow rapid drainage once flooding subsides.

During dry conditions, the sunken layout maintains a standard basketball court footprint with clear boundaries, hoops, and markings. The design preserves full court functionality and allows the space to be used regularly for sport. When flood risk increases, the court’s below-ground position, drainage setup, and surrounding grade management convert it into passive flood infrastructure, combining public recreation and climate adaptation in one shared facility.
