Espace Gabrielle Chanel is a contemporary art library occupying part of the Power Station of Art in Shanghai, offering an extensive collection of books, audio material and reference resources. The space spans multiple floors, featuring open reading areas arranged around curved interior volumes that follow the original building's industrial geometry. The design uses light-toned surfaces and wide circulation paths to make the former power plant feel accessible while keeping the existing structure visible. Seating zones, study tables and exhibition areas are placed throughout the interior so visitors can move easily between research and display spaces.
The library includes a theatre, a design centre and a rooftop terrace overlooking the river. The layout combines public gathering functions with dedicated study rooms and archival storage. The project aims to support contemporary art research by placing exhibitions, performance areas and reading spaces in one integrated setting. The overall design preserves the industrial shell while introducing new cultural facilities for public use.
