In addition to symbolizing a win, sports trophies typically convey a limited amount of information about the recipient. The trophies that Jun Mitani designed for the Player of the Match winners at the Rugby World Cup in Japan, however, will be able to look back at the objects and recall highlights from the event.
In collaboration with MasterCard, Mitani developed rugby trophies that will be etched with real-time highlights collected from in-game commentary. The origami-like design of the trophy itself is based on traditional Japanese paper folding and includes a triangular panel that will display commentary collected from the official World Cup feed by a computer program. These high-tech trophies are set to play a special part in marking the first Rugby World Cup in Asia.
