Sugar Cane-Inspired Skyscraper Facades

Studio Gang Builds the Kō'ula Skyscraper in Hawaii

As far as skyscraper facades go, this one in Hawaii is definitely quite creative and unconventional. This residential tower was designed and built by Chicago-based architectural firm Studio Gang and the appearance of the exterior "takes cues from local ecology." The skyscraper facade is inspired by sugar cane and, in fact, even the name of the residential tower, Kō'ula, translates to "red sugar cane."

The aesthetic of the skyscraper facade also has a functional advantage, not just an aesthetic one. Because Studio Gang embraced the "twisting structure of the plant," the decision also "maximized views of the nearby ocean" for all windows of the 41-story structure. The design also provides some headed areas for the terraces, offering a reprieve from the sometimes unforgiving sun.

Through an elevated walkway, the residential tower connects to a podium structure at its base.
