InSinkErator's LEDefense is a new sink flange technology that integrates antimicrobial LED light into garbage disposals to continuously combat odor-causing bacteria and inhibit mold growth. This innovation was developed in collaboration with the health technology company Vyv. It presents the first application of always-on visible light disinfection within the category of residential kitchen appliances.
The LEDefense system emits a specific wavelength of visible light, between 400 and 420 nanometers, which has been shown in laboratory testing to kill 99% of odor-causing bacteria while remaining completely free of ultraviolet radiation and safe for continuous, unrestricted use around people and pets. The light is described as a pleasant purplish-blue hue, and its placement in the sink flange allows it to illuminate the grind chamber and surrounding areas where bacterial growth typically thrives.

Why This Trend Is Growing
- Visible-light Disinfection
- Represents the mainstreaming of safe, always-on 400–420 nm photonic antimicrobial treatments in consumer products, opening pathways for scent-free microbial control integrated into daily-use surfaces.
- Always-on Antimicrobial Appliances
- Signals a move away from intermittent sanitization toward continuous in-situ microbial suppression within household appliances, redefining expectations for hygiene performance.
- Health-tech Co-designed Hardware
- Demonstrates growing alliances between appliance brands and biotech firms to embed clinically validated antimicrobial technologies directly into product design, creating hybrid health-home devices.
Industries Being Reshaped
- Kitchen Appliance Manufacturing
- Poised for transformation through integration of antimicrobial lighting as a key selling attribute that redefines value propositions beyond traditional performance metrics.
- Home Health and Hygiene
- Likely to expand as ambient-safe disinfection technologies establish new expectations for continuous microbial control across domestic environments and personal-care products.
- Plumbing and Fixture Design
- Expected to adopt antimicrobial illumination within form factors and materials, influencing maintenance norms and specification criteria for built environments.
