Walmart will be employing Gatik AI to create its self-driving delivery vans. The autonomous vehicle startup is based out of Toronto and Palo Alto and specializes in driving technologies for short-hauling goods with commercial vans. The AI company sees itself as uniquely positioned to fill a need as the company believes that there is a gap between long haul autonomous trucking and sidewalk delivery robots.
The self-driving delivery vans are Ford models that are then outfitted with Gatik's autonomous driving capabilities, the vans are able operate in urban environments and are able to drive up to 200 miles daily.
With this move, Walmart continues to operate in the world of autonomous vehicles. The company has previously partnered with an autonomous driving company named Waymo in Arizona.
