From vegan hot dogs to a meatless take on its classic Swedish meatball recipe, IKEA has experimented with a range of plant-based products—now it is selling jars of Sjörapport, or Seaweed Pearls, as a kind of vegan-friendly caviar.
The plant-based caviar alternative is made from kelp seaweed and it may be used as a colorful, slightly salty addition to sandwiches, appetizers and dips, or as a topping on a variety of foods. When consumed on their own, the plant-based orange pearls apparently do not burst open like ordinary fish eggs, yet still retain a crunchy texture.
As well as noting that its Sjörapport is ideal for vegans and vegetarian consumers, IKEA also points out that "by eating more vegetable foods you reduce your carbon footprint."
