There are people who prefer to sleep on hard surfaces and those who would rather soft. Either could find comfort on the stiff and industrial Schellmann Bed, though at first glance it seems best suited to the former group.
Designed by Jorg Schellmann, this inflexible piece of furniture has been manufactured from strong tubular steel as its frame and rigid sheets of perforated aluminum as the mattress base and the headboard. Inspired by the architectural and sculptural work of Bauhaus and Minimalist masters, this unusual object looks like it might be found in a warehouse or a factory.
Clean lines and a sturdy shape make it appealing to the eyes and secure for the sleeping body. A version of the Schellmann Bed comes with a broad shelf at one end for an added utilitarian quality.
