Rosemary Packaging Blocks

The Scentra is a Rosemary-Based Packaging Block

Scentra is a rosemary-based packaging block that compresses agricultural waste into protective packaging for essential oil bottles. The material uses discarded rosemary stems and trimmings sourced from an organic farm in Guizhou, China, combining the plant matter with a seaweed-based binder. The resulting block is molded or cut with a cavity matching the silhouette of the bottle it holds, creating a fitted structure without conventional foam. Rosemary fibers retain their natural scent after compression, giving the packaging an additional function once the product is removed.

The material was developed by Zhixi Dai, Zhou Yun, and Wang Zhan using rosemary waste collected through Omni Biotech’s AOLUX line. Local workers from low-income families are employed at the farm as part of its rural revitalization program. After use as packaging, the compressed block can be placed on a shelf as a passive diffuser, with additional essential oil applied when the scent fades. The packaging contains no electronics or powered components and retains the rosemary’s texture and aroma.
