The Homestead House Adapts Prefabricated Steel Arch Structures

The Homestead House is a conceptual modular dwelling that repurposes prefabricated steel arch building systems commonly used for agricultural structures into off-grid housing. Designed by Michael Jantzen, the concept uses recyclable steel arches and straight panels that bolt together without requiring secondary structural supports or specialized construction methods. The modular system can be assembled, disassembled and reconfigured over time, allowing additional living spaces to be added or removed as household needs change.

An inner lightweight frame creates a cavity for blown cellulose insulation made from recycled newspaper, enabling insulation thickness to be adjusted for different climates. The off-grid design incorporates photovoltaic panels, a vertical-axis wind turbine, passive solar strategies, solar water heating and rainwater collection integrated into the arched roof structure.
