At Expo 2025 Osaka, a robotic wedding cake called RoboCake as unveiled, showcasing advancements in robotic food research, like gummy robotic bears and edible dark chocolate batteries powering the candles.
RoboCake was made possible by a team effort on behalf of EPFL (the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne), the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, pastry chefs and food scientists from EHL, Hospitality and Business education group. An international research group is working on creating edible robots as part of the RoboFood project. “Robotics and food are two separate worlds,” said Dario Floreano, head of the Laboratory of Intelligent Systems at EPFL and coordinator of the RoboFood project, “However, merging them offers many advantages, particularly in terms of limiting electronic waste and food waste.”
