The Recovery Lounge is a brand new way of thinking about hospital beds.
While the design world pumps out innovations in everything under the sun year after year, the hospital is seemingly a design-free zone and bears a striking resemblance to hospitals from decades ago. Why is this? It's not as if they've become obsolete institutions that no one cares about. Quite the opposite: the appearance and functionality of hospitals is very influential on the level of comfort patience enjoy. Having a forward-thinking approach to hospital design isn't exactly a hot topic, but with the arrival of The Recovery Lounge, maybe things are headed in the right direction.
This project, by Priestmangoode, is one that takes its cue from their work for passenger jets, hotels and airports. They apply the design lessons learned and sensibilities acquired in those fields to the hospital arena.
