After the government eased COVID-19 lockdown rules and began stages of reopening, the city of Amsterdam saw an "increase in people urinating in the streets" and in order to provide a solution for this, Dutch company GreenPee introduced hemp-filled public urinals. The design is intended to meet the aesthetic needs of the city and as a result, it is disguised as a planter with a tank full of hemp fibers and the opening for peeing is on the side. Smart sensors send a message when the tank is nearly full and when emptied, the mix of urine and hemp is used as an organic fertilizer—from city parks and roof gardens to urban farms. In this way, the public urinals do not only solve a problem but also contribute to a greener future.
