Balloon-Powered Communications

Google Will Host a Trial for Its Project Loon

Google's Project Loon has been set for a commercial trial in Kenya. The program aims to support communications in under-connected areas, be it from underpopulation, or from inadequate infrastructure. Project Loon is partnering with a prominent communications carrier in Kenya, titled Telkom Kenya.

The program has seen success in Peru as well as Puerto Rico, where the project was implemented to aid connectivity issues in the wake of natural disasters. The program was able to support connections to approximately 100,000 people. however, this implementation was only temporary.

For the Kenya launch, Google looks to add a more permanent solution to underconnectivity. The company has indicated the program will provide the area with 4G connectivity at market prices.
