These fascinating photos of fishermen -- Greek fishermen specifically -- were captured by photographer Christian Stemper. For this particular project, Stemper interviewed 31 fishermen and paired up each photograph with an excerpt that sheds a broad new light on what the fisherman lifestyle means to the subkect.
Here's an example of a quote attributed to one of the fishermen: “I learned from my grandfather and my father. This knowledge will be lost, as there is no one to follow the tradition. When we’re gone, it’s over. I feel empty when I go ashore, then I have the feeling of being worthless. My children want me to stop. I told them, if you love me, you have to let me go. My whole life is in the sea.”
The photos of fishermen are simply framed but together with the excerpts, work to provoke thought in the viewer.
