Once-Weekly Pediatric Insulin

Novo Nordisk Receives FDA Approval for Children's Diabetes Treatment

Novo Nordisk has expanded access to once-weekly pediatric insulin following FDA approval of Awiqli for children aged 10 and older with type 2 diabetes. The long-acting treatment replaces seven weekly basal insulin injections with one, potentially making diabetes management easier for young patients and their caregivers while supporting blood sugar control.

Administered through the Awiqli FlexTouch pen, the medication is taken on the same day each week. Its pediatric approval draws on adult clinical trials and a study examining how the medication behaves in children aged 10 to 17. Patients still require appropriate dosing and blood sugar monitoring because serious side effects, including hypoglycemia, remain possible.

For Novo Nordisk, the approval expands Awiqli's eligible patient population and strengthens its diabetes treatment portfolio. Availability through more than 70,000 pharmacies nationwide supports distribution, while less frequent injections offer families another treatment option.
