Fresh Seafood Subscriptions

Ocean's Table Boxes Arrive to Consumers Directly from Fishermen

Ocean's Table is a new seafood subscription service that is setting itself apart by making freshness a top priority. In the same way that there are numerous farm-to-table restaurants, Ocean's Table describes: "our fresh fish comes directly from the ocean to your table."

The seafood subscription is available in several different options, including the Tasting Sampler, Fisherman's Choice and Captain's Select, which provide enough fish to feed between two to five people. Some of the kinds of fresh fish and seafood that can be ordered in this way include scallops, halibut, haddock, swordfish and tuna; customers ordinarily receive their purchase from Ocean's Table after just 12 to 24 hours of filleting.

The Ocean's Table facility is located on the Gloucester Harbor, so that when local fishermen return with a catch, the products are quickly prepared, packaged and shipped. With this direct-to-consumer approach, Ocean's Table bypasses stores and middlemen, as it notes that "Our team of fishermen, fish cutters, and packaging handlers have decades of experience and a long tradition of working on the ocean. They fully understand the proper way to prepare and package fresh fish."

Direct-to-consumer Seafood Subscription
Opportunity exists for other seafood businesses to adopt the direct-to-consumer model, bypassing stores and middlemen.
Freshness-driven Subscription Services
The success of Ocean's Table demonstrates that there is demand for subscription services that prioritize freshness and quality of food products.
Sustainable Seafood
There is an opportunity for seafood businesses to focus on sustainable fishing practices and market their products as environmentally conscious.

Where This Applies

Seafood Subscription Services
The Ocean's Table model presents an opportunity for other seafood subscription services to rise and cater to customers' desire for fresh and high-quality seafood directly from the source.
Fishermen Cooperatives
Similar to Ocean's Table partnership with local fishermen, there is a potential in creating cooperatives of fishermen who share a critical mass of customers to offer their products directly.
Retailers and Grocers
As direct-to-consumer seafood subscriptions rise, retailers, and grocers could see a decline in their seafood sales and will need to innovate in other areas to remain competitive.
