Converted Church Art Centers

Nyth Turns a Victorian Church into a Creative Space for Young People

Nyth converts a Victorian church in Bangor, North Wales, into a contemporary youth arts centre that unites heritage and creativity. Designed by Manalo & White for the theatre company Fran Wen, the project preserves original stonework and timber detailing while adding new circulation routes and performance areas. The west-facing entrance, cut beneath the historic window, now opens directly to the street, transforming the once-enclosed building into a welcoming social space for the community.

The layout focuses on flexibility rather than formality. The nave functions as the primary performance hall, supported by workshop rooms, a greenroom, and a mezzanine level for informal gatherings. Materials such as reclaimed pew timber, lime plaster, and exposed steel retain the building’s tactile history while supporting sustainability goals. Nyth stands as an example of how adaptive reuse can bridge tradition with modern cultural purpose.
