Fictional Basketball Universes

NINJA BASKETBALL ARMY is an Story Brand Set in an Alternate Japan

NINJA BASKETBALL ARMY introduces a fictional world where rival ninja clans compete through basketball instead of warfare. The project imagines a parallel 16th-century Japan where feudal disputes are settled through a sport derived from the traditional ball game temari. Ninjas replace weapons with basketballs and score through peach-shaped baskets inspired by the historical symbolism of the momo fruit. Each clan develops its own playing style, techniques, team identity, and ninjutsu-based approach to the game. The project spans story development, character design, apparel, and visual identity.

The brand was created by Japanese collective NINJA BASKETBALL ANONYMOUS under the direction of Takaya Mitsunaga. Clan logos and kamon reference regional Japanese history, while a custom typeface developed with the Iga Ueno Chamber of Commerce and Industry draws inspiration from Jindai Moji. The project debuted through the 初鳴 -SHOMEI- exhibition in Tokyo. Its official launch will coincide with the opening of the NBA 2026-27 season.
