Children are often showered with resources and treated like kings and queens, which makes these Nikolai Shuryguin portraits of youths looking like royalty both tributes to their essence as well as commentary on the way parents treat their kids. Whether Shuryguin intended the latter is up for debate, but there’s no arguing over how masterfully painted these portraits are as they exude a technical proficiency rivaling that of artists from the Renaissance.
Funnily enough, the children in these Nikolai Shuryguin paintings are all dressed in attire that affluent people commonly wore some decades ago, dating the paintings and giving them a centuries old look. It also makes the youthful subjects appear much older than their physical age as it seems they've been coerced into partaking in activities they would not enjoy, despite looking impeccable.
