Portable Bolt-Turning Systems

Nexterity's Remote-Controlled Robot Tightens Pipe Flanges

Nexterity built a remote-controlled robot that lets pipe crews loosen and retighten the heavy bolts holding pipe sections together from a safer distance. The startup focused on bolted flange joints, the ringed pipe connections used across oil, gas, and petrochemical systems, where manual bolting can wear workers down and lead to injuries.

The machine breaks into two battery-powered sections that clamp around a pipe, move along it after setup, and turn four bolts at once. That format keeps the tool small enough for one worker to carry in a case and better suited to repeat jobs on standard pipe sizes, which is where automation has the clearest payoff.

This opens room for construction-equipment-style rental models instead of a heavy permanent install. Portable automation that can move site to site could reset expectations for field tools, pushing rivals to shrink their own systems and make deployment simpler.

Portable Field Robotics
Compact, carryable robots are reshaping industrial maintenance by bringing automation to temporary worksites without requiring fixed infrastructure.
Remote-controlled Safety Tools
Worker protection is advancing through equipment that separates operators from repetitive, high-strain, and hazardous mechanical tasks.
Rental-ready Automation
Tool-as-a-service models create new commercial pathways for specialized robotics that deliver value across recurring jobs and multiple sites.

Where This Applies

Oil and Gas
Pipeline and refinery operators face growing potential for portable automation that reduces downtime, injury risk, and labor intensity in flange maintenance.
Petrochemical Manufacturing
Standardized pipe systems provide fertile ground for robotic bolting tools that improve consistency across high-volume maintenance environments.
Construction Equipment Rental
Rental fleets could expand into modular industrial robots as customers seek high-value automation without large capital commitments.
