Clifftop Coastal Houses

The Negrilla House is a Coastal Residence Overlooking the Pacific Ocean

The Negrilla House extends across a ravine in the Chilean village of Matanzas as an elongated timber residence designed by Croxatto and Opazo Architects. The 152-square-meter home follows the site's contour lines with a pier-like structure coated in black bio-resin to withstand the coastal climate. External walkways run along both sides of the building, leading to two stacked terraces that curve toward Pacific Ocean views. Full-height glazing connects the main living spaces to the landscape, while the elevated layout maximizes western-facing outlooks.

The home divides into two levels where the terrain becomes steeper, creating separate upper and lower terraces that respond to the site's topography. The lower terrace sits beneath the living area and provides a sheltered outdoor space enclosed by exposed timber walls. Planed pine boards treated with a white water-based finish line the interior.

Terrain-adaptive Homes
Site-responsive residences that follow steep contours create opportunities for modular structural systems, prefabricated components, and design software tailored to complex coastal plots.
Climate-resilient Timber Architecture
Bio-resin-coated wood and weather-resistant finishes signal growth potential for low-carbon materials engineered for salt air, humidity, and high-wind environments.
View-optimized Living
Elevated layouts, full-height glazing, and layered terraces reflect rising demand for residential designs that merge scenic exposure with sheltered outdoor functionality.
