The moss-covered mixed media work of artist Lina Hsaio displays an intriguing nature-inspired approach to portrait work.
Hsaio uses naturally grown moss and lichen organisms alongside a number of different materials. The choice to use these organic materials is an inspired one, not only because moss and lichen can grow on many different types surfaces but also because they comes is a wide variety of sizes, shapes and colors. These moss-covered facial portraits are especially intriguing because they decorate the sculpture while becoming a key focus of the artwork as well.
The tree-like facial features of these portraits suggest that the moss itself has become the living, breathing and thinking subject being observed. From the use of natural materials a whole new type of texture and depth is breathed into the artwork.
