Photographer Sofia Valiente has put together an extremely powerful, thought-provoking and somewhat disturbing photobook that tells the story of Miracle Village, a rural Florida town whose population consists predominantly of sex offenders. Many of the inhabitants are sex offenders who finished their prison sentences and were shunned by their communities, and driven to seek refuge elsewhere.
What makes the project all the more impressive is the fact that Valiente is only 24 years old and even lived there briefly to complete her project. Her pictures offer a tender and sensitive gaze into the lives of people that are unanimously labeled as monsters by society. Her photos show the residents of Miracle Village as having "a certain camaraderie and a shared history, but also this shared sense of exclusion from society."
