Giant Pop-Up Books

The Luceros Y Penumbras Installation is the World's Largest Pop-Up Book

Luceros y Penumbras is a record-breaking pop-up book created to celebrate the Los Angeles Public Library's 100th anniversary. Recognized by Guinness World Records, the installation measures 31 feet wide, stands more than 11 feet tall, and weighs approximately 1,800 pounds. Developed by artist Daniel González and paper engineer Matthew Reinhart in collaboration with the Library Foundation of Los Angeles and the Los Angeles Public Library, the oversized work is displayed in the Richard J. Riordan Central Library Rotunda through mid-November 2026.

The installation unfolds across two large interactive spreads turned weekly. One features the Central Library beneath a star-filled sky inspired by González's childhood memories, while the other presents a Tree of Wisdom surrounded by imagery representing Los Angeles, El Teúl, Mexico, and Indigenous mythology. The exhibition is accompanied by selections from the library's Toy Movable Collection, along with family story sessions, paper engineering workshops, and additional public programming celebrating interactive book design.
