Wright & Wright completes a sustainable refurbishment of Lambeth Palace, marking the first major restoration of the Archbishop of Canterbury’s residence in over seventy years. The Grade I listed site in London was upgraded with a fabric-first strategy to improve thermal efficiency, replacing more than two hundred heritage-style windows and adding air-source heat pumps and photovoltaic panels. These measures reduced energy use by more than sixty percent while preserving the historic character of the building.
The project also addressed accessibility and safety with new lifts, a discreet ramp, and modern facilities. Craftspeople repaired the Great Hall’s timber roof, restored plasterwork, and conserved original stone features. The result is a careful balance of heritage and sustainability, ensuring the palace remains functional for future generations while honoring its role as one of the most significant ecclesiastical buildings in the United Kingdom.
