The LACE pillow's impressive visual effect is achieved through the use of plastics. The faux-lace section of the pillow is made from a special type of polyurethane that is resistant to light, while the "gaps" in the lace are actually a completely transparent plastic. As such, light goes through the gaps while getting blocked by the lace designs, giving the illusion of a pillow made from a doily.
