La Maraude is a compact residential dwelling by Nathalie Thibodeau Architecte located in Boileau, Quebec’s Outaouais region. Completed in 2024, the home is set deeper within the treeline rather than positioned directly along the river’s edge. Its design draws from Quebec vernacular architecture through steeply pitched rooflines, grounded proportions, natural cedar shingles, and a metal roof. The material palette is kept simple, with traditional building references translated into a contemporary residential form.
Two courtyards organize the house and frame changing views of the surrounding forest. One faces north and is partly enclosed by the building, while the other faces south toward lower terrain. A second volume responds to the sloped site with two levels and smaller openings that frame specific views into the tree canopy.

Trend Themes
-
Forest-courtyard Living — Courtyards integrated with wooded sites emphasize framed nature views and privacy, indicating a shift toward compact homes that mediate between interior comfort and forested landscapes.
-
Vernacular-modern Hybridization — Traditional Quebec rooflines and cladding translated into contemporary forms point to a broader blending of local architectural language with minimalist modern aesthetics.
-
Site-responsive Massing — Split volumes and varied openings calibrated to slope and canopy conditions reveal design approaches that prioritize context-specific form-making over generic footprints.
Industry Implications
-
Residential Architecture — Architectural practices focused on small-footprint, context-driven homes are positioned to redefine suburban and rural housing typologies through courtyard-anchored plans.
-
Prefabrication and Modular Building — Factory-built modules designed to accommodate steep roofs, timber cladding, and differentiated volumes could streamline delivery of site-adaptive residences in remote landscapes.
-
Sustainable Materials and Forestry — Demand for locally sourced cedar and low-impact roofing materials is creating opportunities for material supply chains that align forest stewardship with contemporary construction needs.
