The Karosta Kube is a Monolithic Mass Proposed as a Community Center

A brief description of the Karosta Kube might make it sound hard and unwelcoming, but the visitor would certainly find his transition inside of it swift and fascinating. This is Gilles Retsin and Isaie Bloch's proposal for a new public building in southwest Latvia to fit within the highly varied fabric of the old Eastern European military town.

The designers decided to leave the existing sheds and garages on the site and to orient the rectilinear mass of a structure on one corner to create a small footprint. Resembling a big rolled boulder, the Karosta Kube community center would have a sturdy steel frame and textured cladding of prefabricated concrete panels. Added detailing would come from the fibrous strands of golden rebar that bridge the internal and external apertures.
