Self-Adjusting Insulin Systems

This System Helps Keep Blood Glucose At Desirable Levels

A group of Chinese researchers working out of Zhejiang University have developed a high-tech insulin system that is designed to be able to make use of nanoparticle technology in order to adjust the release of insulin system, effectively helping to reduce the risk of both low and high blood glucose that can occur as the result of too much or too little insulin administration.

This insulin system makes use of biologically compatible nanoparticles whose surfaces are modified in order to be able to carry positive charges. This makes it possible for insulin molecules, which are negatively charged, to bind to the lipid nanoparticles. As a result, when blood glucose is at normal levels, insulin ends up being released slowly. However, when blood glucose level is dangerously high, the nanoparticle surface charge gets reduced, resulting in increase release of insulin.

Ultimately, this insulin system could revolutionize the lives of Type 1 diabetes patients, who currently face the burden of having to regularly utilize insulin to keep tabs on their blood glucose levels.
