The National Science and Media Museum Boasts Sound and Vision Galleries

— July 15, 2025 — Social Good
The National Science and Media Museum in Bradford has made a significant step toward inclusive museum design with the introduction of the newly transformed Sound and Vision galleries. This marks a £6.8 million investment aimed at redefining accessibility in cultural spaces, supported by National Lottery funding.

The inclusive museum design was developed in close collaboration with accessibility experts and community representatives. From the outset, the institution engaged diverse groups — including D/deaf, blind, partially sighted, and neurodivergent individuals — through an Access Panel and Youth Forum to ensure that the reimagined galleries cater to a wide range of needs. The resulting space prioritizes universal access by incorporating tactile maps, Braille labels, audio descriptions by local artist Kirsty Taylor, and BSL-interpreted content. Physical and sensory considerations, such as wheelchair-friendly layouts and alternative routes to avoid sensory overload, further demonstrate the museum’s commitment to removing barriers.
