In the Assembly of Lovers Debuts as a Modular Installation

— February 10, 2026 — Tech
The In the Assembly of Lovers installation is a site-specific architectural work by Sumayya Vally commissioned for the inaugural Art Basel Qatar in 2026. The project draws from historic gathering spaces across the Muslim world, referencing courtyards, riverbanks, marketplaces, and the majlis as social and spatial precedents. These influences are translated into a modular structure designed to shift and adapt over the course of the fair.

Constructed using plywood and micro-cement, the installation is paired with an eight-channel sound work that activates the space through voices and ambient audio. The structure is intended to be reconfigured daily to host conversations, performances, and collective encounters. Rather than functioning as a static pavilion, the installation operates as a living framework shaped by use and participation. The project emphasizes shared presence and architectural memory, positioning gathering as an evolving cultural practice within the contemporary art context.

Trend Themes

  1. Modular Public Architecture — Flexible, reconfigurable structures that adapt daily to program and participation create new models for transient urban interventions and pop-up civic infrastructure.
  2. Participatory Sound-activated Spaces — Multi-channel audio integrated with site design enables environments that respond to human presence and narrative, reshaping the role of acoustic programming in social encounters.
  3. Cultural-memory Informed Design — Design strategies that embed historical spatial practices and communal rituals into contemporary forms offer frameworks for architecture that mediates identity and collective belonging.

Industry Implications

  1. Event Design and Management — Services that plan for mutable layouts and programmatic shifts present opportunities to reconceive audience engagement and venue lifecycles for recurring cultural events.
  2. Prefab Building Materials — Engineered plywood, micro-cement systems, and modular components tailored for rapid assembly create potential for scalable, reusable architectural elements in temporary and permanent projects.
  3. Immersive Audio Technology — Eight-channel and spatial sound systems calibrated for dynamic spaces point toward new products and services that merge acoustic design with participatory programming.
