Implantable Arthritis Treatment Devices

SetPoint Medical Expands Nerve Stimulation Therapy

SetPoint Medical is expanding access to implantable arthritis treatment devices with the first use of its SetPoint System at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. The FDA-approved therapy offers adults with difficult-to-manage rheumatoid arthritis an alternative approach that uses electrical stimulation rather than additional medication to regulate inflammation.

The system features a small implanted device that stimulates the left vagus nerve, activating natural pathways involved in controlling immune responses. Delivered through an outpatient procedure, the treatment is intended for patients who have experienced inadequate results or intolerance with certain advanced arthritis medications.

For SetPoint Medical, the Boston milestone supports broader commercial expansion across New England and other U.S. markets. Healthcare providers gain another option for patients with limited treatment success, while the company is also exploring potential applications for multiple sclerosis and Crohn's disease.

Bioelectronic Immunotherapy
Implantable nerve stimulation is reframing chronic inflammation care by creating non-drug pathways for managing autoimmune conditions with fewer medication dependencies.
Outpatient Implantable Care
Minimally invasive device placement in outpatient settings expands access to advanced therapies while reducing hospital resource use and patient recovery burdens.
Vagus Nerve Modulation
Targeted stimulation of the vagus nerve is emerging as a platform approach for regulating immune activity across rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn's disease, and neurological disorders.

Sectors Adopting This

Medical Devices
Implantable electroceutical systems create growth potential for device makers developing therapeutic hardware that competes with or complements biologic drugs.
Rheumatology
Specialty care providers gain new treatment models as bioelectronic therapies address patients who do not respond well to existing advanced arthritis medications.
Digital Health
Connected monitoring and programming tools can strengthen implantable therapy ecosystems by enabling personalized stimulation settings and longitudinal treatment insights.
