Toyota has constructed the DKR GR FC Hilux for Dakar 2027, turning its rally truck into a hydrogen fuel cell prototype. The experimental machine is built to race in the Dakar Future Mission 1000 category for vehicles still in development.
It keeps the custom bodywork and chassis of the original GR DKR Hilux EVO T1+, but swaps the ICE for a fuel cell setup. The truck wears a white-and-blue livery, a shorter wheelbase than the roadgoing Hilux, high-clearance fenders, oversized tires and long-travel suspension. That mix lets Toyota test fuel cell durability in brutal desert stages while producing water instead of CO2 at the tailpipe.
For drivers, it points to cleaner motorsport hardware that still looks every bit as tough as a conventional rally rig. Toyota also plans a production Hilux FCEV variant for 2028, tying the prototype to a roadgoing future.
