London-based studio Carmody Groarke has really outdone itself with this 'house within a house' project. The architecture office is tasked to design a space that is "slotted into the brick shell of a Victorian warehouse in south London." Needless to say, the aesthetic is quite meta. The building reserves a raw and industrial aesthetic by way of materials — predominantly concrete.
The 'house within a house' project proved to be quite difficult to execute. For one, the original structure was not particularly "designed to carry this additional weight." Carmody Groarke focused on minimal obstruction and, as a result, the design of Lambeth is anything but busy. The new buildings were "wrapped in brickwork" and "finished internally with concrete" to achieve this effect.
