Those who are lucky enough to enjoy a central heating system in their home most likely find it hard to imagine how people stay warm in developing countries; it isn't safe, that's for sure, but the Greenway Smart Stove hopes to provide an accessible solution. The Greenway Smart Stove addresses the common use of mud stoves and indoor open fires that causes millions of deaths each year.

Created by Greenway Grameen Infra, an India-based startup founded by student entrepreneurs, the Greenway Smart Stove is a single-burner cooker that generates 80% less smoke and uses 65% less fuel. It also performs better than an electric fan stove due to an air-flow generator that provides clean combustion. Affordable and safer, it recently received the $50,000 grand prize in the annual Intel Global Challenge at UC Berkeley.
