FUTURE HISTORY: Lineage and Form of Onnagata arrives at Tokyo's National Theatre for a two-day exhibition celebrating the history of Kabuki through performance, archival material, and contemporary art. Curated by dancer and choreographer Ranshou Fujima, the exhibition will temporarily reopen the theatre's closed Grand Theatre stage, allowing visitors to walk across the historic performance space. At its center is Kyōkanoko Musume Dōjōji, one of Kabuki's most celebrated dance dramas and a defining work of the onnagata tradition.
Spanning five thematic sections, the exhibition presents more than 100 historical works, archival documents, costumes, and creative collaborations. Highlights include rare ukiyo-e prints, Edo-period texts, original stage costumes, new washi photography by RK, acrylic geta developed with architect Shigeru Ban's office, and Fujima's film de(i)fied. Together, the works examine three centuries of onnagata practice while reconnecting Kabuki with its wider cultural, literary, and historical context.
