Stacked Cultural Villages

Bihailou Art Village Forms a Vertical Cultural Complex

Bihailou Art Village is a 6,500-square-metre mixed-use development by MVRDV currently under construction in Shenzhen's Shatoujiao district. Conceived as a vertical village, the project organizes museums, retail spaces, restaurants, and a double-height performance theatre into individually shaped volumes inspired by the colors, materials, and forms of the surrounding neighborhood. Each geometric block has its own entrance and is connected by an external circulation network of staircases, ramps, and escalators, allowing individual venues to operate independently.

The theatre overlooks a public plaza through a full-height opening and incorporates retractable seating that allows the space to transition into an exhibition hall. Landscaped public areas surround the ground level, while accessible rooftop terraces extend across the stacked volumes to create additional gathering spaces. A mix of boxy, rounded, and pitched forms finished with varied cladding reinforces the village-like composition.
