Scent Diffusion Installations

The FRAMA Apothecary Scent Installation Uses a Water Wheel

The FRAMA Apothecary scent installation is a multisensory exhibit presented by Danish brand FRAMA at Matter and Shape in Paris. The project was developed alongside the Union Series by designer Michael Antrobus and centers on a mechanical system that diffuses the brand’s signature Apothecary fragrance. A water wheel mounted within a trestle structure rotates continuously, circulating scented water through the installation. The fragrance features notes of sandalwood, cedar, and ylang-ylang and is released into the surrounding space as the mechanism operates.

The installation is constructed with a metal wheel mechanism set into a table-like frame that supports the rotating system. Water flows through the wheel as it turns, acting as the carrier for the scent. Surrounding elements include vessels, books, textiles, and kitchen objects arranged across the surface. Additionally, there are drawings and photographic materials accompanying the display and reference the scent’s composition and development.

Water-powered Diffusion
Physical fluid dynamics are used as a carrier for scent, enabling low-energy, continuous aromatic dispersion across public spaces.
Multisensory Brand Installations
Combining scent with tactile objects and imagery creates immersive narratives that shift consumer perception and deepen brand engagement.
Craft-mechanical Scent Systems
Visible mechanical components and artisanal construction turn functional scent delivery into a design focal point that redefines product aesthetics.

Industries Being Reshaped

Retail Environments
Permanent and pop-up stores could integrate engineered scent systems to influence customer dwell time and perceived product value.
Hospitality and Wellness
Boutique hotels and spas may employ water-based aromatic installations to craft signature atmospheres that differentiate guest experiences.
Museums and Exhibitions
Curators can layer scent into exhibitions as a contextual storytelling tool that augments interpretive content and visitor memory.
