The Fazer Remix 30th Anniversary Candy Bag Includes a GS1 2D Code

— December 6, 2025 — Marketing
On the Fazer Remix 30th anniversary candy bag, consumers will see a QR-like GS1 2D code on the back of the packaging. The dynamic GS1 2D code includes a unique product number, the GTIN code, and checkout systems read it in the same way as an EAN barcode. But unlike the traditional EAN code, the 2D code contains a link to consumer-facing online content, as well as variable batch-specific information, like best-before dates and production details.

“GS1 2D code offers several benefits: it enables more detailed product information sharing, improves traceability, and provides consumers with easy access to additional product details," said Katja Santala, Director, Packaging Development & Technology at Fazer. "The code also streamlines information flow between retailers and manufacturers and opens new opportunities, for example, in food waste reduction and enhancing customer experience." As such, in the future, 2D codes may very well replace EAN barcodes.
