Archer Aviation is developing electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft, known as eVTOLs, to move travelers in less time than comparable car trips. The company is designing the aircraft for both commercial air taxi service and defense applications.
Archer says its aircraft are intended to reduce trips that can take about 90 minutes by road to flights lasting 10 or 15 minutes. The company has also been selected as the exclusive air taxi provider for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, creating a high-visibility potential use case as it works toward aircraft certification and commercial operations.
For consumers, the model could provide a faster option for city and airport travel, particularly on congested routes and during major events. The project reflects a broader shift toward electric aircraft as part of urban mobility networks. Building and certifying a new aircraft category requires substantial capital, prompting Archer to enter public markets when it had fewer than 100 employees. The company has since raised nearly $4 billion, demonstrating how capital-intensive transportation startups are exploring public financing earlier than conventional technology businesses.
