French design studio Vurpas Architectes transforms a market building originally constructed in the 60s to create Eugénie Brazier. It is now a nursery and primary school in Lyon a focus on the long structural foundation of the market. The school also features perforations on the brickwork and embodies a neutral tonal palette as a nod to the existing building.
The Eugénie Brazier school accommodates a nursery as well as 15 classes with a matching extension. The studio explains the design influence and concept to Dezeen, stating "The project is based on the continuity of the old hall and an extension that precisely matches the existing structure, using its compositional lines and constructive principles to create a new whole. Composing with an 'already there', even though it was far removed from its new purpose – early childhood education – made it possible to go beyond the program. That's the magic of rehabilitation."
