Elif Bulut Coat Rack Uses Push-Out Discs to Create On-Demand Hooks

— March 27, 2026 — Art & Design
The coat rack by Elif Bulut is a wall-mounted storage concept built as a flat square panel with 16 circular elements arranged in a 4×4 grid. Each circle functions as a concealed hook that sits flush within the surface until activated. Pressing a disc pushes it outward to create a hanging point, while pressing it again returns it to a flat position, removing any visible protrusion when not in use.

The system allows each hook to operate independently, so only the required number of hanging points are exposed at any time. The panel remains visually minimal when inactive, with no fixed arms or rails interrupting the surface. The design replaces traditional rows of hooks with a responsive layout that adapts to changing needs, using a push mechanism to control extension and retraction across all 16 positions.

Trend Themes

  1. On-demand Surface Hardware — A shift toward flush-mounted, user-activated fittings signals opportunities for integrating functional elements into flat surfaces to preserve aesthetics while providing intermittent utility.
  2. Minimalist Adaptive Furnishings — Designs that remain visually unobtrusive until needed are enabling furniture that dynamically reduces clutter and supports flexible living patterns.
  3. Modular Concealed Mechanisms — Distributed, independently operating push-out components point to scalable systems where discrete modules provide configurable functionality without permanent protrusions.

Industry Implications

  1. Residential Interior Design — Home environments could be reimagined with invisible, deployable fixtures that maintain clean sightlines while delivering occasional utility.
  2. Hospitality and Public Spaces — Spaces like hotels and lobbies stand to benefit from retractable hardware that preserves durability and appearance under heavy use while offering on-demand amenities.
  3. Office and Co-working Environments — Workplaces may adopt surfaces with intermittent attachment points to support evolving layout needs and reduce visual distractions in shared areas.
