Scientists at Meiji University in Japan are developing a special device, which has appropriately been dubbed 'electric gum.' It is capable in bringing individuals the sensation of a chewing gum that never loses its flavor. Although the device zaps one's tongue to stimulate taste, the process is rendered completely painless. The secret behind the electric gum is the piezoelectric effect. This is a phenomenon during which the squeeze of certain materials can produce an electric charge.

With this forward-thinking innovation, the researchers are not only revolutionizing our experience of chewing gum but also offering limitless opportunities for efficiently taste-testing products. Currently, the electric gum is able to stimulate bitter and salty tastes but there is a plan to further develop the product in accordance with its pattern.
