The Econik 1851 is a 3D-Printed Sand Speaker System

The Econik 1851 is an active loudspeaker designed by Anton Erbenich. The most notable detail is the structure, as it has an enclosure 3D printed from quartz sand. The sand-based shell creates a rough, ceramic-like surface while also reducing micro vibrations that can affect sound clarity. Its near-spherical internal volume is shaped to limit standing waves inside the cabinet, supporting more consistent acoustic behavior.

The Econik 1851 hangs from steel cables attached to a curved stand, separating the speaker from surface contact to reduce vibration transfer. As an active system, amplification and processing are integrated into the speaker, which is designed to simplify setup compared with passive speakers that require external components. The design combines an unconventional mineral enclosure with a suspended mounting approach to address resonance and isolation through form and material.
