Nike’s EasyOn Backpack Offers Dexterity for All Athletes

Nike has introduced the 'Nike Elite EasyOn Backpack,' designed to improve accessibility for athletes of all abilities. Initially developed for "Paralympic athletes ahead of the Paris 2024 Games, the backpack features an intuitive design aimed at providing greater efficiency and ease of use for all athletes."

The design of the EasyOn Backpack was influenced by the experiences of Richard Ramsay, a Senior Footwear Developer at Nike, who was born without his left arm; his challenges with tasks like retying shoelaces inspired his interest in biomechanics and accessibility. Working with Nike's Universal Ease team, Ramsay helped create a backpack that addresses the difficulties athletes with limited hand mobility face when using traditional backpacks. According to Brent Radewald, Nike’s Lead Equipment Designer, feedback from adaptive athletes pointed out that features like" zippers and closures were hard to manage for individuals with limited dexterity, leading to the development of a more accessible and functional alternative."
