Sculptural Museum Expansions

Diller Scofidio + Renfro Unveil Images of the Broad's Expansion

New York architecture studio Diller Scofidio + Renfro introduced a look at the grey sculptural expansion that will be a part of the Broad Museum in LA. It is right next to the iconic gallery and features spaces for more installations, performance spaces, storage areas, and even two courtyards with an open-air design. It highlights a rectangular shape right over the plaza with the definition of curved windows that are pushed into the facade.

Diller Scofidio + Renfro partner Elizabeth Diller states, "I think of the new building as a companion to the existing Broad. The pair shares DNA, but each has its own distinct character and purpose in constant dialogue with its counterpart. The exterior of the expansion echoes the surface appearance of the vault – as if this core had been exposed and 'unveiled' – symbolically expressing The Broad's commitment to access while playfully inverting the visual vocabulary of the current building."
