Cashless Grocery Concepts

Tesco's Self-Serve Concept Grocery Store Adopts a Cash-Free Model

A concept grocery store at Tesco's head office in Welwyn Garden City is open to the public as the first Tesco Express to be entirely cashless. With cash-free checkout machines, Tesco has found that its systems reduce the average the speed of in-store transactions by half. As the store also serves as an innovation hub that is connected to test kitchens, event spaces and more, some staff members are also testing an app-based solution that lets consumers bypass the checkout entirely.

At the concept grocery store, self-serve experiences can also be had by consumers before they get to the checkout—an in-store machine makes it possible for consumers to bottle freshly squeezed orange juice on-demand.

One of the other innovative features of the Tesco store includes the integration of custom playlists, based on the profile of the shoppers in the area, such as the elderly or students.
